Does this sound familiar?

Most people know they should sort this.
Most people haven't.

Nearly half of all adults in the UK don't have a will. Most of them mean to get it done. The problem is that it feels complicated, uncomfortable to think about, and easy to put off. Until it isn't.

No will in place

Without a will, the government decides what happens to your estate. It may not go to the people you'd choose, and the process can be stressful and expensive for your family.

No Lasting Power of Attorney

If you were to lose capacity through illness or injury, your family would have to apply to the Court of Protection to manage your affairs. That process takes around 9 months and costs over £3,000.

No plan for your assets

Without the right structure in place, more of your estate could go to HMRC in inheritance tax than necessary. With careful planning, that can often be reduced or avoided.

Leaving it for the family to sort out

When someone passes without a clear plan, it falls to the people left behind to untangle it. That's a lot to ask of people who are already grieving.

About Graham

A real person. A proper conversation. No jargon.

I'm Graham Hughes, a Will and Estate Planner with Squiggle Consult, a certified B Corp estate planning firm that has been helping families across the UK for over eight years.

Before moving into estate planning, I spent more than 25 years in financial services, including senior management roles. That background means I understand how wealth is built and what it takes to protect it properly. It also means I know how to have straight, practical conversations about money and planning without making people feel overwhelmed.

I'm based in South Liverpool and work with clients across Merseyside and throughout the UK via video call. My approach is simple: I listen first, explain clearly, and make sure you leave every conversation with more clarity than when you started.

There's no pressure. No complicated forms pushed through the post and forgotten about. Just a proper conversation about what matters to you and your family, and a clear plan to protect it.

Common questions

Things people ask before they book

Plain English answers. No jargon. If your question isn't here, just get in touch.

Do I really need a will? +
Yes. Without a will, the government's intestacy rules decide what happens to your estate. Your money and possessions may not go to the people you would choose, and the process can be slow and stressful for your family at an already difficult time. A will is also the document in which you appoint guardians for any children under 18.
What is a Lasting Power of Attorney and why does it matter? +
A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) lets you appoint someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf if you ever lose the capacity to do so yourself, through illness, injury or dementia. Without one, your family has no legal right to manage your finances or make decisions about your care, and would need to apply to the Court of Protection, which takes around 9 months and costs over £3,000.
How much does it cost? +
The cost depends on what you need and how straightforward your situation is. The first step is always a free consultation, where we talk through your circumstances and give you clear, upfront pricing with no obligation whatsoever. There are no hidden charges and no surprises.
I'm not based in Liverpool. Can you still help? +
Absolutely. I work with clients across the UK via video call. The process is just as straightforward remotely as it is in person, and most clients complete everything without needing to travel anywhere.
I already have a will. Do I still need to do anything? +
Possibly. Your will can become out of date if your circumstances have changed since you wrote it. Marriage, divorce, having children or grandchildren, changes in your financial situation, or the death of a named executor or beneficiary can all affect how your will works. A review usually takes less time than people expect and gives real peace of mind.
What is inheritance tax and can it be reduced? +
Inheritance tax is charged on estates worth more than £325,000 at death, currently at 40% on the amount above that threshold. With careful planning, it can often be significantly reduced or avoided altogether. It's sometimes described as a voluntary tax, because many of the tools to reduce it are perfectly legal and available to most people. The April 2027 changes to how pensions are treated for inheritance tax purposes make this more relevant than ever.
